I know MANY people, newbies and not so newbies, are really looking for how to get more visitors to their sites. Believe me, I understand you, with my first websites my visitors were no more than 100 daily, and that is undoubtedly frustrating. So, before writing about the main topic of this post, let me give you some basic, and probably obvious, advice.

• 1. Read, read and read different ways on how to get traffic and test them all.
• 2. SEO is not everything: there are many more ways to get visitors to you website.
• 3. Use new social media to get visitors such us Twitter, Facebook, etc. Google Buzz could be a very good way send visitors to your web page, remember is a brand new service, try to explore different ways to use it for your benefit.

You all know that Twitter is THE thing on social media right now, people around the world just love it. Like it or not… you can´t deny that if you have a Twitter account with many followers you can show them whatever you want… like LINKS!

This is the reason why the most online marketers are using it as a marketing platform.

So, the best way to use this script is obviously with a niche site (and, as you may know, niches are endless).

Choose a niche, then select 3 keywords on that niche, then buy a domain with one of those keywords on its name (I bought a cheap .info), set up the site, and then simply make some links to it (from 10 to 20 directories, make some comments on related blogs, etc), then just be patient.

Yes, now you can have an advanced social network running on your server with BuddyPress (for WordPress MU), which it is not a simple plugin, it is a “suite of WordPress plugins and themes, each adding a distinct new feature”, as it says in their site.

Facebook features in WordPress

BuddyPress has some really cool features that all social networks such as Facebook has.

Some of these features are:

• Private Messages: this is the basic feature for a social network, private messaging allows users to interact between them rather than with the site (like the comments on a common WordPress installation).
• Friendship: yes, of course your members will be able have other members as friends. Just like Facebook: they can search for people in your network (through different profile filters) and request friendship, which could be accepted or not by the other person.
• “The Wire”: this is a feature such as the comments on a normal blog, but you can comment other people´s profile, so imagine this as the “wall” feature in Facebook.
• Activity streams: this is one of those things that make this script really cool. Each profile is going to have each own streaming of the different activities they make in your site (such as commenting, adding a friend, etc).

If you are thinking to build your own social network, this is definetely an option to try. First you can see a working demo and then download BuddyPress 1.1, which has been released few days ago.

Also, please, remember that BuddyPress only works under WordPress MU.

I have tried a not so good script to clone this excelent site, but I think the solution I found handle the problem in a better way.

PressMark allows you to make your own del.icio.us using WordPress, yes WordPress! But PressMark is not a plugin, it is a deeply customized version of this CMS that works as del.icio.us does.

With PressMark, your users can submit links into it and tag them. As well as this feature, users can also categorize them as public or private.

How to install PressMark

As I wrote above, PressMark is simply a customized (very customized) version of the common WordPress package, so, to install PressMark is the same process than when you install WordPress. This script uses version 2.6 of WordPress as its base, which is not bad at all.
